WORKING TO PROMOTE FLORIDA GRASSHOPPER SPARROW CONSERVATION

“SAVING FLORID’S SPARROW”

This short film featured the work of White Oak Conservation and their partnerships as they work to breed this species in managed care and prepare them for life in the wild to help bolster the wild population across managed lands. The film was developed in an effort to tie local audiences, ranchers, and birders into the program and build support for Florida grasshopper sparrows in Central Florida. The film premiered at the Jacksonville Film Festival and was shared locally among other film festivals in Central Florida.

ONE OF AMERICA’S MOST ENDANGERED BIRDS

The Florida grasshopper sparrow, Ammodramus savannarum floridanus, is one of the most endangered birds in the U.S. It is native to Florida's dry prairie habitats, which have been drastically reduced due to human activities like agriculture, development, and fire suppression. These factors have caused habitat loss, fragmentation, and degradation, which significantly threaten the species. Additionally, predation by invasive species, such as fire ants, has increased pressure on their already small population.
